Nació en Oak Park, Illinois, Estados Unidos en 1936. Hijo de Roland Robert y Ruth Helen Shaw. Siendo apenas un niño sus padres se mudan a Long Beach, California, donde el pequeño asiste regularmente al Long Beach State College. En 1955 se gradúa en la Universidad del estado como mecánico de fabricación de aviones y de estaciones generadoras de energía. En 1957 se convierte en piloto de la Fuerza Aérea Norteamericana donde se mantiene en servicio activo hasta 1962. Por estos días inicia también su carrera de escritor realizando artículos para revistas especializadas en aviación. En 1963 se convierte en editor de la revista Fliying. Durante su carrera como piloto desempeña todos los oficios del ramo: instructor de vuelo, piloto de Charter, mecánico de aviación en Iowa. En 1970 tiene el cargo de presidente de la aerolinea Trans-creature. Allí trabajó, además, como piloto acrobático en la Creature Enterprises. Inc. Acerca de sus dos oficios escritor y aviador ha dicho. "Volar es mi religión; es la única forma que tengo de aproximarme a la verdad".
