Teólogo alemán especializado en el periodo del Segundo Templo o periodo helenístico del judaísmo, entre 200 adC y 200 de nuestra era. Profesor emérito de Nuevo Testamento y Judaísmo temprano en la Universidad de Tubinga. Se centró en el estudio de los inicios del judaísmo rabínico y en los orígenes del cristianismo primitivo.
