Fue uno de los máximos representantes de la música country norteamericana, aunque también cultivó otros estilos musicales, como el góspel o el rock&roll. Conocido por su voz grave y profunda, solía vestir ropa oscura y se hacía acompañar por una banda llamada Tennessee Three. Muchas de sus canciones tienen un marcado tinte existencial y moral, aunque también compuso letras humorísticas o con temáticas propias del country. Durante la Guerra de Corea se alistó en el ejército y fue destinado a Alemania, donde fundó su primer grupo musical. Después de salir de las fuerzas armadas se trasladó a Menfis, donde comenzó estudios para entrar en la radio mientras trabajaba como vendedor de electrodomésticos y tocaba la guitarra en un grupo. Más tarde consiguió un contrato y grabó varios temas. Consiguió su primer número 1 con “I Walk the Line”, y en 1958 firmó con Columbia Records, donde su “Don't Take Your Guns to Town” se convertiría en uno de sus mayores éxitos. Ya por entonces tomaba anfetaminas. A finales de los años 60’s realizó una serie de conciertos en varias cárceles, en las que grabó dos directos. A principios de 1970 abandonó las drogas y redescubrió la fe cristiana. Ganó dos premios Grammy en 1993 y 1996. Falleció en 2003, cuatro meses después que su esposa, a causa de la diabetes que padecía. Para entonces había vendido cerca de noventa millones de copias. En 2005, se estrenó una película sobre su vida (Walk the Line), en la que es encarnado por el actor Joaquin Phoenix, que estuvo nominado al Oscar al mejor actor. En 2006 se estrenó un musical basado en su obra.
