Es considerado un investigador perteneciente al movimiento de Tercera búsqueda del Jesús histórico.

Ejerció como académico del Centro de Estudios Judíos de la Universidad de Leeds, en West Yorkshire.

Defendió la teoría de que Jesús de Nazaret era un fariseo y que el cristianismo fue originado por Pablo de Tarso.
